Say goodbye to the agricultural season in Monroe County by attending the Autumn Harvest Festival that is filled with bluegrass, gospel and country music that will keep your feet tapping. Music is not the only thing to keep you busy at the Autumn Harvest Festival. Browse the many vendors selling homemade quilts and crafts and watch the competition for best flowers, vegetables and home canned foods. The festival also features a large flea market and tractor pulls for both adults and children.
There may be nothing better than eating warm chili on a cold autumn night. At Beckley's Annual Chili Night, you will be able to taste and judge a variety of delicious homemade chili while enjoying live entertainment. Even if chili is not your meal of choice, you are sure to find other meals and desserts that will cause your mouth to water.
October Sky Festival
In 1998, a book entitled Rocket Boys lined the shelves of stores nationwide. The book chronicles the life of Homer Hickam, Jr. who grew up in the small mining town of Coalwood, West Virginia. The book grew in popularity and in 1999 was developed into a movie entitled October Sky starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Return to Coalwood for the October Sky Fall Festival that celebrates the book with food, entertainment and a meet-and-greet with the author.
If chills and thrills are your type of thing, visit The Asylum Haunted House located at The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston. Once called Weston State Hospital, Trans-Allegheny has been investigated--and determined to be haunted--by both Sy-Fy's Ghost Hunters and the Travels Channel's Ghost Adventure. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum housed the mentally ill from the 1800s up until it was forced to close its doors in 1994. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is also open to heritage and walking tours during the day as well as over-night ghost hunting excursions.
